San Mateo County Sports Hall of Fame Back Under a New Name

The former San Mateo County Sports Hall of Fame and induction banquet, now known as the Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame, is back, thanks to the efforts of the San Mateo County/Silicon Valley Convention & Visitors Bureau, the San Mateo County Event Center and columnist John Horgan.  The induction process and banquet began in 1987 and ran through 2008, honoring ten outstanding individuals in the San Mateo County athletic world each year.  The San Mateo County Times, originator of the program, is this year’s media sponsor.

The event, to be held at the Event Center, was renamed to reflect the inclusion of Palo Alto athletes and coaches in the process.   Joining the ranks of Tom Brady, Lynn Swann, Bill Walsh, and John Madden, this year’s induction banquet will honor the following top San Mateo County/Palo Alto athletes and coaches:  Spencer Folau, Jim Loscutoff, Frank Mangiola, Ed Montague, Tori Nyberg, Jim Soden, Mike Solari, Jim Whitney, Haley Woods and Bill Neukom, Managing General Partner/CEO of the World Series Champion San Francisco Giants.  (Information on each inductee is below).

“We have taken on this event in order to continue honoring those in our county and Palo Alto who have done so much in the world of athletics, whether through their own athletic efforts or through the motivation of others.  Our area has ‘given birth’ to super stars who, in turn, have created other incredible athletes and teams”, said Anne LeClair, president and CEO of the Bureau.  She noted that the Bureau has put an increasing emphasis on recruiting sporting events of all kinds to the area, generating room nights and a positive economic impact.  Revenue from the Induction Banquet will be put toward recruitment of additional sporting events.

The event will be the highlight of a new SPORTS DAY at the fair, designed to support sporting activities and fitness throughout the area. “We value sports and are increasingly becoming the venue for numerous sporting events.  Hosting this event and creating an entire Sports Day at the Fair will show our community that we value our local athletes and coaches and their hard work,” said Event Center General Manager Chris Carpenter.

In support of this event, an online auction is being held through June 8 at www.charityauctionstoday.com/store/smccvb/ , with prizes ranging from luxurious hotel stays to Bay cruises.  In addition to the auction, a raffle will take place the night of the event.  Raffle tickets may be purchased for $10 each, 3 for $20, or 10 for $50.  Prizes include hotel stays, tickets and Giants merchandise.

Tickets for both the event and the raffle may be purchased through the Bureau at peninsulashf@gmail.com or 650-348-7600, and at the California Welcome Center located in Hillsdale Shopping Center, San Mateo.  All paid attendees will receive two tickets to  Stanford Football’s opening home game against San Jose State, as well as a ticket to the San Mateo County Fair for the day of the event.  Tickets for the induction banquet are $80 per person.  Reservation deadline is June 7, 2011.
